As a trainer, motivator and a coach I see first hand the affect that confidence has on an individual’s or a group’s success. By and large confidence grows from each small success that an individual takes towards reaching a goal. That is why I ask you to focus so much on goals and visions! When you know where you’re going, you’re going to gather the tools and information you need to reach your destination.

Your Turn – Prepare to overcome your fear.

• Make a list of your personal confidence killers. Be as concise as possible.

• Now make a list of ways that preparation can help you overcome your confidence killer.

• Take the steps you outlined in section 2 above and write out solutions to your confidence killers.

Lifestyle and mindset.

1. Who do you know that is successful or exudes self-confidence? What are the specific attributes they have that contribute to your perception of them? Write down those attributes and find ways to incorporate them into your daily routine.

2. Find a mentor or a coach whose goal is to see you succeed

3. Say goodbye to the ‘naysayers’ in your life. Likely you have one or two people who tell you that “you’ll never make money walking dogs,” or something similar. At this point in your career, ignore them. They may motivate you to prove them wrong, but spending too much time with people who don’t believe in you and your goals is a major confidence killer. Ask them to keep their thoughts to themselves or move on without them.

4. Become self-aware. Pay attention to the ways in which you talk to yourself. Are you constantly putting yourself down, or saying you’re sorry? Stop it! You are the best YOU possible! What you can provide to your customers and their pets is unparalleled!

5. Commit to learn. Is your confidence killer public speaking? Then enroll in a Toastmasters Group or sign up for an adult education course on public speaking. You’ll meet new people who are struggling to overcome the same confidence killer you are – and you’ll thrive on each small success – both theirs and yours. Whatever your Confidence Killer is – educate yourself to overcome it!

6. Look the part. If your confidence waivers because you think you look too young or too old (or too something else) to run a business, then find ways to look the part you want to play. If you doubt that you would believe YOU as a business owner, ask yourself why. When you’ve determined what your concerns are, find ways to address them by either altering your dress, your presentation or your phone demeanor. Looking the part is not being fake–it’s putting the best you possible forward. While it’s an unscientific study, I do know that I scored better on tests in college when I was showered and neatly dressed for the exam!

7. Have some fun. It’s your business and you are good at it so why not enjoy it and compliment yourself for all the things you do well? When you have fun, everyone will assume you are self-confident and happy and they will want to be with you!

• Executive Visibility / Support. Senior executives from the service provider side must have high visibility and access. This includes steering committees, reciprocal headquarter visits, joint speaking engagements,
regularly scheduled calls, quarterly and annual briefings.

• Behaviour/Communication/Culture. Be prepared to invest in and encourage business process transformations that are aligned to business goals – rather early in any outsourcing relationship. Transformation requires a partnership mindset, not a transactional orientation. Innovation is often not brought to bear because clients do not ask for it, define what they mean by it, and motivate the provider to deliver it, or put restrictions around it. Clients rarely help the provider to understand what is important to them.

Breathing is something we all do during our life time. We all know we are going to die if we are not breathing. Breathing is a reflex action done by our body to provide the flow of oxygen around the body to the vital organs.

Babies may breathe as much as 40 times per minute. Adults normally breathe about 500-700ml of air at a time. An average 14 year old takes around 30,000 breaths per day.
However, we can control our breathing. We can be more relaxed by breathing in and out so deeply. The more we allow our body to be filled by deep breathing, the less stress we place on our body and mind.

The more we practice our deep and controlled breathing, the more natural it becomes and we can call on it at any time of day to help us through those tired or stressed out moments.

With all the problems we have — either we feel stressed out at work, or at the end of a long hard day and we can’t sleep, or if we just want a few minutes to our self — we will find this simple breathing exercise really beneficial.

Here are some steps to do breathing exercise:

1. You can lie down, sit down or stand up as long as you are comfortable. Breathe in slowly through your nose to the count of four. Breathe very deep until all your body feel expanded.

2. Hold on that deep breath for four counts, and then exhale slowly through mouth to a count of eight.

3. Repeat the breathing in – right down so your tummy expands. Hold on to it and then exhaling nine more times.

4. You can breathe deeper once you get used to the above steps by leave one hand on your stomach and place the other lightly across the chest. Breathe right down so your tummy expands

5. When it can’t go any further, breathe in some more and fill the tops of your lungs. Inhalations and exhalation are the same length, eight counts each, without holding in between.

6. When you exhales, let the old air out from your chest then from your tummy. So, you are going to be relaxed.

I met my wife a dozen years ago and her best friend shortly thereafter. I was always fond of my wife’s friend. We all shared a good deal of time together through our college years and now into our thirties. She is married with two children as are we.

We live in the same town, our families spend a good deal of time together, and I’m good friends with her husband. My problem is I cannot stop thinking about her. I’ll go out of my way to be with her. I dream about her nearly every night.

I am physically attracted to her but no more than to any other good looking 30-year-old. My wife and I have a good relationship physically and emotionally. So what the heck is going on? What should I do?

I can’t break off all contact. Our families are much too close, and everybody will want to know why. I think telling my wife will only get her upset. So I am stuck with feelings I can’t tell anybody about, and I can’t think of any way to correct my situation.

Robin, there are many ways to alter the course of a life. For example, you could rob a bank. You could pass a note to a teller that says, “Give me all your money.” That would change the course of your life, but it’s not a very productive method and neither is this fantasy.

Nowhere do you state this woman has a romantic interest in you. She seems to be an innocent puppet in a play you’re staging in your mind. In fact, her reaction to an actual overture may turn your dream into a nightmare. If you tell your wife, it may change the way she looks at you forever.

A huge amount of mental energy is flowing toward this other woman. Why? What is wrong with the rest of your life that your thoughts flow there? That is where you need to look. Your wife’s best friend is a diversion from something you need to face up to.

It could be your career is not going where you wanted. It could be something else. But before you take any more steps down fantasy road, focus on what you really think about your life, your job, and your family.

The dream you had for life is not turning out as you hoped, and that is why you dream of your wife’s best friend. Pulling mental energy away from her and shifting the focus to yourself, will point you toward the answer. If the answer still eludes you, individual counseling may help.

Not Enough

I am in a relationship that is still fairly new. He and I have things in common, but our feelings toward this relationship are not mutual. He treats me exactly like I want to be treated, but I don’t have a strong desire for him.

Not that he’s unattractive or anything like that, it’s just I feel that it’s a bit rushed. I am tired of casual dating and I want something solid, but not overnight. He also does and says everything he thinks I want to hear and not what he really feels.

My sister thinks I am selfish and unappreciative, but that’s not really the case. She tells me to keep him, he’s a good man. I already know that, but I don’t feel he’s the good man for me.
