That time of the year is finally here. You know what I’m talking about, the one or two weeks you get every year to escape from “real life” and just be you. Relax, eat and drink well, enjoy your family, catch up on some much needed sleep. But, before you pack up and head out, rethink the all-too-normal hotel stay. Believe it or not, you have options, one of which is the vacation rental.
Wouldn’t it be nice to leave your own home, arrive in your destination city and settle into a “home away from home” for your next vacation? That’s what vacation rentals are all about. These are homes waiting to be rented out by people on vacation. Each vacation rental owner will have different criteria in what type of renter they are looking for, each vacation rental house will vary in amenities, and each price will be dependant on the time of year and the length of stay. So, it sounds like a great idea, but how do you figure out how to make it all happen? Not a problem. Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding vacation rentals. Read on, my friend, your next “home away from home” vacation rental is right around the corner.
Frequently Asked Questions on Vacation Rentals
What are the advantages of a vacation rental?
Do you ever wish your hotel room had just a little more personality? Yeah, I thought so. Well, renting someone else’s home for your vacation might just be the thing you’re looking for. Usually offering larger living spaces than hotel rooms, these vacation rentals are all about living like you were in your own home. They offer greater privacy than hotel rooms and most rentals have a kitchen area for cooking, which in the end will save you money if you prepare some of your own meals.
You’ll enjoy several rooms, and maybe even different levels, instead of one big room where the whole family sleeps. Many owners will leave information on things to do and see in the local area. Vacation rental homes are clean, friendly, comfortable and inviting. This is because many of them aren’t just rental homes, but also function as the owner’s own residence for part of the year.
A majority of vacation rentals tend to be cheaper on a per night basis than their hotel counterpart. By renting directly from the owner you will avoid taxes, tips and other extraneous charges. However, there is a wide variation among costs based on a number of factors (see How Much Should I Expect to Pay below)
What are the drawbacks of a vacation rental?
Of course, there’s always the other side of the coin. As vacation rentals are not usually monitored by a central managing company, you’ll only know what you’re getting yourself into when you actually arrive to your rental. Many owners require pre-payment, or at least a large deposit fee, before arriving. Therefore, if things aren’t the way you anticipated after arriving, or if you find your dwelling unacceptable and decide to head to a local hotel, you may lose any money you prepaid. This is also true for last minute cancellations. There isn’t usually a refund. You always run the risk of getting less than you expected, but, it’s rare.
Most times, vacation rentals tend to be cheaper than an average hotel room per night. But, not always, so make sure you are comfortable with the price you will be asked to pay.
Another disadvantage to vacation rentals is the lack of a managing member on site to deal with any problems that you may encounter with the home or during your stay in general. Most owners get around this by having a list of emergency numbers, utility companies and other such items available to the renter should they need anything.
What amenities are included in a vacation rental?
Since every rental is owned by a different owner, each will include different amenities. Some come with swimming pools, hot tubs, others with golf packages, and horse stable privileges. In cities with tourist attractions, some owners include tickets to local attractions.
Most vacation rentals come with the essentials: TV, equipped kitchen, towels, linen, and everyday appliances, but it never hurts to ask these questions when searching for the perfect place. Be sure to understand exactly what you are paying for before sending in the payment.
What types of rentals are available?
Pretty much any type of dwelling that you would want to live in during your vacation is available somewhere. From studios in downtown Manhattan to a villa in the south of Spain, you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for. The range of available options is mind boggling. Additionally, each week, month and year there are new possibilities as owners put their homes up for only certain weeks or months of the year, the choices are constantly changing.
Are vacation rentals only available in the US?
Vacation rentals are available worldwide. They can be found in every state of the US and almost every country in the world. Don’t be fooled by their different names, though. Vacation rentals are also known as holiday cottages, tourist rentals and holiday rentals. If you are looking for one in Europe, the Italians call them agriturismi, while the French say gites. If you are in Germany you will be looking for ferienwohnungen (yep, try to say that three times fast with a bratwurst in your mouth!)
Regardless of what you call it, though, a vacation rental is a great option for those getting ready to take a few weeks off from reality and enjoy the good life a bit.
How do I find a property?
There are several ways to go about finding the perfect vacation rental for your next trip. Check with your local travel agent to find someone in your area that specializes in finding owners and renters and getting them together. Another option is the yellow pages. Finally, there is a wealth of information on the Internet. Type in a search for “vacation rentals” and over 13,300,000 websites can be found just on www.google.com alone. Some websites only list vacation rentals in the United States while others specialize in vacation rentals worldwide. There are some sites that will allow the potential renter to look for a residence by specific search criteria such as a particular destination, certain number of bedrooms and types of amenities that are included in the property.
Most of the vacation rental services on the internet are only the “go-between” or the “classified” section of the newspaper. They take no responsibility for the truth or correctness of the ads that are listed on their sites. So, do your homework by making phone calls, speaking with the owner and asking specific questions. Make sure you feel comfortable with the answers, if not, move on to the next rental, there are plenty.
If you’re not comfortable with the whole renter/owner thing, there is another way to rent a vacation home. Some companies exist that strictly buy and rent out homes to vacationers. They offer a bit more security so that you feel you are truly getting what you bargained for (although nothing is ever 100% fool proof). Additionally, sometimes these agencies will give you cancellation insurance. In other words, if you cancel before arriving, they may be able to refund a portion of your deposit or payment instead of keeping it as most owners do if a cancellation occurs. With some agencies you’ll find that you pay a higher price than going directly to an owner. This is how the agencies make their profits. There are always pros and cons to each scenario. Ensure you know which one works best for you.
How much should I expect to pay?
This is a tough question to answer. The amount you pay will depend on what country or state you are visiting, number of days you are staying, and type of house you are renting. Some owners offer package deals including tickets or sightseeing events along with the rental, others include bonus days if you stay for a certain length of time. There are other owners who may offer free or add-on house cleaning service with your stay while some go to great efforts to ensure you have everything you need, even additional items such as a crib, highchair or wheelchair. Each vacation rental will be entirely different than the next. Your best bet after deciding on your destination is to review multiple rentals to determine which is better suited to your needs and overall budget.
Are there any hidden fees?
Hidden fees usually only emerge after you have arrived. These may include extra for phone calls, house cleaning service, extra person fees, excess heat and air-conditioning bills, pet deposit, computer access… etc. Again, be extremely thorough when interviewing the owner of your prospective vacation rental. Ask about any “extra” fees, or if the house is “all-inclusive”. Do you have free access to all the pantry and food items? How about the laundry supplies? All utilities? It never hurts to ask!
Vacation Rentals
In summary, cover all bases by asking lots of questions. Getting your agreement in writing is also a very smart idea. After these basics are out of the way you will be ready to take off for your home-away-from-home vacation rental. Try one this year and see for yourself that vacation rentals can be a fantastic means to really getting the full enjoyment out of your next vacation.

As is often the case, the more we travel, the less we think about our safety. It’s easy to become comfortable in a hotel when we spend so much time in it. Most people have caught themselves opening their hotel room door without asking who it is when they’ve ordered room service. And, quite frankly, you are usually so tired and desperate for the salad and glass of wine you ordered an hour earlier that you don’t even look closely at the person entering your room.
With more and more terrorist warnings about possible hotel attacks in addition to the usual bad guys out there, it’s important to keep safety as your number one priority. Room service and accessing your e-mail come in at a close second. Here are some tips from the American Hotel and Lodging Association to all of the road warriors out there. Stay safe!
Don’t answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who is at the door. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from the hotel staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.
When returning to your hotel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel.
Be observant and look around before entering hotel parking lots.
Close the door securely whenever you are in your hotel room and use all of the locking devices provided.
Don’t needlessly display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables, at the swimming pool, or other places where they can be stolen.
Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
Don’t invite strangers to your hotel room.
Place all valuables in the hotel’s safe deposit box.
Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
Check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked.
If you see any suspicious activity, please report your observations to the hotel management.
Upon arrival, notify the Front Desk if you require special evacuation assistance in the event of an emergency.

With the intensity of expansion occurring in television machinery at the present time it is actual worthwhile to understand a few of the most significant developments. This info to liquid crystal display tellies (LCD) considers the particular advantages of this technology. This info gives you all the vital facts on how to obtain the greatest picture and explains a number of the essential attributes to beware of with LCD tellies.
There at this moment in time two convincing advantages with LCD tellies over Plasma TVs. The first is that they could possibly be a great deal easier to watch when weighed to a cathode ray tube (CRT) TV. This is primarily because displays are notably brighter with a high contrast level and flicker free image. LCD tellies traditionally work good in nearly any sort of room condition from bright to ambient. Next, Liquid Crystal Display tellies normally have a higher native resolution than plasma televisions of the identical dimension as a result making them wonderful for HD output. Whilst plasma TVs are currently superior for total screen size, as more and more television outputs come in high-def TV (HDTV), LCD manufactured goods will probably come to the top.
How LCD TVs Essentially Work? Prices lowered on Cheap 26″ LCD TV at Sound and Vision!
LCD equipment is rather difficult & improving each & every day. This technology is founded upon the fact that liquid crystals are, in their traditional state, warped. The capability of the crystals to let light through can be modified by submitting electric current. Very simply put, a light source is passed through a liquid holding crystals held between 2 polarised displays. By allowing the exact quantity of light to go through, the desired picture is produced.
It seems that since the mobile broadband providers have been adding a laptop into the packages being offered sales have begun to soar, this is not as it always seemed to be.
Back in July sales of mobile broadband packages with a laptop only accounted for four per cent of the total. However, in the last month of trading this has risen to twenty seven per cent.
The average mobile broadband deal is set at around £25 per month and will run over twenty four months; this will include a laptop into the bargain. Yet if a customer signs up for a mobile broadband dongle on its own it may cost around £15 per month. This means that the customer is going to get a laptop for about £10 per month over two years, which works out at about £240!
With so many mobile broadband providers offering different laptops and services, there has never been a greater need for new customers to compare broadband deals in order to make sure that they are getting the right package to suit their needs.
A Phones 4U spokesperson said, “Since launching laptop-broadband deals, we have seen significant sales growth month-on-month and predict that laptop-broadband deals will be top-sellers this Christmas,”
This market has gone the same way as the mobile phone market did a while ago with free handsets. New customers are likely to be spoilt for choice in the coming weeks as the build up to the festive season takes hold.

Chicago was founded in the early 1800s and served as a connection between the developed East Coast and the enlarged Wild West. On the shores of Lake Michigan, the development of suburbia and skyscrapers was low but persistent. Though the devastating fire of 1871 grounded Chicago, it came back again and this time growth took pace every decade. By 1900, it crossed the mark of two million people.
Chicago is now the third largest city in the United States next to New York City and Los Angeles, California. Not only being the third largest city in the U.S, Chicago also ranks among the world’s leading industrial and transportation centers
From what I have read, Chicago is nicknamed the windy city for different reasons. The first reason is that the Mayor of Chicago boasted so much about Chicago hosting the worlds fair, which implied the Mayor was windy. Another reason was that the politicians in the Chicago are full of hot air therefore implying the windy city. The last reason is that the editor of a newspaper was trying to promote Chicago as a summer resort and used Lake Michigan’s summer breeze as a selling point. I do not know which of the reasons above gave Chicago its nickname the windy city but they all seem to make sense to me.
Chicago is also renowned for its excellent art institutions and museums, great food and great jazz music. If you have an appetite for sports, Chicago has the legendary Bulls, Bears, and Cubs, which are well known all over the world.
Chicago is a wonderful place to visit. The fever of Chicago will impress you.
Deemed by some as the wildest street party on the face of the planet, Carnival in Salvador, Bahia is the place to be during those five crazy days in February or March. Different from the more spectator-oriented Carnival in Rio, Carnival in Salvador puts you in the middle of the music, the dancing, and the rhythms of the some of the most energetic bands in the world.
Once the center of sugar cane production and accompanying slave trade, Salvador, Bahia is Brazil’s capital of African culture and Religion. Carnival is the time of year when this Afro-Brazilian culture truly shines, with every music group in the city, from traditional afro-percussion groups to more contemporary axe bands (axe is a modern mix of afoxe and other contemporary rhythms), performing day and night. Bands perform on enormous trucks (loaded with thousands of watts of sound) which crawl through one of three principal Carnival Routes. The trucks are called “trios” because the first was a ‘29 Ford which carried a driver and two musicians, Dod and Osmar (today the original car is in the museum at the Lagoa da Abaeté in Itapoan). In the years following the first trio’s appearance in 1950, the bands stuck to the trio format, but have since evolved into a much more grandiose spectacle, complete with enormous bands, costumes, and dancing. All around the trucks is a roped off area called a “bloco”, a type of VIP area with security and refreshments. Outside the cord, usually deemed quite a bit more dangerous on account of the petty thieves and pickpockets, is where the “pipoca”, or popcorn (named for the synchronizing jumping of the crowd) dances and carries on. Another option is buying a ticket for one of the many “camarotes”, which are VIP lounges in hotels and restaurants along the carnival routes.
The Music
Carnival in Salvador offers so many options for different types and music, it can be a bit daunting. If axe music is what you are interested in, check out Margareth Menezes, Ivete Sangalo, Daniela Mercury, Timbalada, or Chiclete com Banana. For more traditional afro-percussion groups, Olodum, Ara Ketu, Muzenza, and Il Aiy are great options. For a look at some traditional samba, check out Terra Samba, and for a not-so-surprise visit by Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil (also one of the most famous MPB artists and a leader in the Tropicalia movement), follow trio Expresso 2222.

Ten minutes out of town, we found the dirt road that goes up to Storm Lake. We had been there before, shortly after moving to Anaconda, Montana. The road was hard on the car, but we couldn’t resist going. This time we would hike up to the tundra and stay the night. My wife Ana had never been camping above the treeline.
There were a couple cars, but nobody in sight. The lake was sparkling in the sunlight, and the mountains of the Anaconda-Pintler range rose up all around it. It was quiet and cool here at 8,000 feet. We put on our packs and started up the trail. Twenty minutes later we were past the lake, and the trail steepened.
Hiking With Guns In Montana
After an hour of zig-zagging up the mountain we met another hiker. We talked briefly, and noticed the handgun on his belt. This is common in Montana. We’ve seen guns on the hiking trails and in the bars, and the bank tellers don’t even blink when customers walk in wearing guns - they probably have their own.
We never did ask this hiker why he had one, and didn’t find out until later that there are grizzlies in the area at times, something some “experts,” have denied. At least we had our freon horn to blast if we met a bear, but then maybe that would just get the bear angry.
The trees got smaller as we climbed, and ended just before Storm Lake Pass. Ana waited patiently at the pass while I ran the five minutes - which became twenty - up to the peak of Mount Tiny, about 10,000 feet high. Small, compared to some of the surrounding mountains, but it seemed almost rude to give a beautiful mountain a name like that.
Later, past goat meadow, Ana waited again while I scrambled up the rocks to the top of Kurt Peak (also about 10,000 feet). I couldn’t find the route where I came up, so I went back up, then down the west side and finally back north to the grassy slope where Ana was waiting.
Maybe it was foolish to leave Ana alone. Just three months later, two boys were attacked by a mountain lion on the hill just behind the town of Anaconda. The fourteen-year-old fired his gun to scare it off. Both boys were probably larger than my gunless wife. Fortunately, we didn’t meet any cougars or bears on this hike, but Ana had other things to worry about.
Camping With Aliens In Montana
“I hear voices,” she told me in the tent that night. I assured her there was nobody within ten miles of us, and then she was worried about aliens landing in the meadow. Well, it would make a good landing site. The wind threatened to shred the tent all night, sounding like the whispers or screams of ghosts - or aliens. By morning the wind relented, but it was well below freezing - time to get Ana home.
Despite the cold she hates so much, Ana couldn’t help stopping to take in the view as we crossed the high meadows on our way home. Mountains, grey with rock, green with grass and flowers, and painted with white patches of snow, were everywhere. Lakes sat in valleys below, unvisited for weeks at a time. We’ll be back there again, but perhaps with bear spray and alien repellant.
Notes:
Forty-five miles of the Continental Divide Trail pass through the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. Other trails in the area are never heavily used. You can easily find mountains and whole valleys where you’ll be the only human residents for as long as you stay.

You have hung up your cap and gown, the parties are over with, summer is here and time for a part time job while you decide what to do next.Your parents are talking college in the fall and you are seriously thinking of it since you got those sports scholarships to use.You were happy to be awarded your letterman jacket and the scholarships thrilled your parents.
Research has begun by mom and dad as they check into the schools around home so there isn’t too much travel or a housing fee to worry about,You took all the right classes for college prep, took the entrance exams from a few schools, college boards and everything else your high school graduation counselor recommended.
Check the schools out in person if you can, make a few appointments and visit. Ask questions; get a tour if you can.Ask about offerings at the school, make sure they have what your child is interested in majoring in , if there is a sports programsee what the requirements are for joining especially if your child was a jock in high school chances are they will enjoy the same only on a different level in college.
Check out the financial end of education as well, are there options for financing, what are the rates, when are payments due and how about student loans? There is much to think about and even more to do as you prepare for furthering education of your son or daughter.
As you are planning and deciding on a future with your child, you cannot help remember watching this one as a little kid, parading around in her preschool cap and gown. Then into kindergarten, her first “real” school, then on to first grade, and another graduation from grade school to highschooland in another four short years they are getting awardsfor excellence and a letterman jacket.
The time passes faster than we realize until we go back and see how things have changed through the years. Babies grow so fast that it seems like it is in the blink of an eye they are in school, dating, graduating from high schooland on to college and we want to preserve these memories too as they become part of the family history. Our children with a lot of patience, understanding and love grow into great young adults, self-confident and ready to handle the world.
