Web hosting companies provide a temporary URL that can be used until you are ready to go live with your site.

The bottom line is to check with your web developer before you commit to anything. If you enlist the services of a good developer/designer you will not have a problem securing exactly what you need for your web site.

The Arkansas River, flowing northwest to southeast, divides
the state in two. Little Rock, the state’s capital and largest
city sits on a bluff on the south bank of the river. Founded in
1812, the city got its name from the French “la petite roche,”
or “little rock,” a stone outcropping on the bank of the
Arkansas River used as a landmark by early navigators.
Called “Little Rock” to distinguish it from a huge cliff
upstream called “Big Rock,” it became a convenient spot to
land before venturing into the Ozark and Ouachita mountain
ranges. Before the Civil War, the little rock outcropping was
larger, but the railroad chipped out a few tons of it to build a
bridge foundation. So, little rock is littler today.

Things to See in Little Rock:

• State Capitols

Little Rock has three state capitols. The original is in the
Arkansas Territorial Restoration, a collection of historic,
pioneer-era buildings.

The second Capitolthe oldest surviving state Capitol west
of the Mississippi and the first site of the state
legislatureis now the Old State House Museum, a classic
Greek Revival on the bluffs of the Arkansas River. It’s also
the site of President Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996
election-night celebrations. The museum houses Arkansas
state history, native art, a collection of Civil War battle flags
and the state’s First Ladies’ inaugural gowns.

The current Arkansas State Capitol, designed in 1899 and
completed in 1916, is a gold dome, quarter-scale replica of
the nation’s Capitol. It sits on a hilltop west of downtown
Little Rock at the former site of the old State Penitentiary.
Made of Arkansas white marble and granite, the building is
similar to the nation’s Capitol but with the unique distinction
of six, 4-inch thick, handcrafted Tiffany brass doors that
shine like six gold bars.

lights that reflect off the elaborately carved brass doors.
Amid all this twinkling white light is the word “Peace”
spelled out in a cool sapphire blue from five circular
windows above the main entrance. Beautiful.

Tip: Another seasonal feature is the 100 Christmas trees on
the lawn, representing Arkansas counties. Each tree is
decorated based on the unique feature of the county. A

• MacArthur Park Historic District or Quapaw Historic District

Downtown Little Rock’s oldest surviving neighborhood is
MacArthur Park Historic District (also known as Quapaw
Historic District, named after the Quapaw Indian tribe). The
focal point is MacArthur Park, located on 36 acres originally
set aside in 1837 for an arsenal to protect the fearful settlers
from Indian attacks, which never came. In the late 1800s
German immigrants settled around the arsenal, building
homes ranging from modest cottages to some of the most
elegant 19th century homes. The neighborhood is also the
birthplace of World War II hero General Douglas MacArthur
born in April 1880. The Quapaw Historic District preserves
these classic Victorian homes from Little Rock’s past, one
of which is the 1881 Villa Marre featured in the opening
scenes of the former television show “Designing Women.”

• Central High School National Historic Site

Now a national historic site, Central High School was the
scene of the 1957 school integration crisis in which nine
black students showed up to attend Little Rock Central High
School under a 1954 Supreme Court ruling against racial
segregation. Although the city expected to be one of the first
southern cities to comply with the new law, the governor
called in state troopers to block the students from attending,
fearing violence and property damage from protestors. After
three weeks the troops were withdrawn and the local police
escorted the students through a side door, only to be
ushered out again four hours later. U.S. Congressman
Hays and Little Rock Mayor Mann appealed to the federal
government and President Eisenhower dispatched one
thousand soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division of the
U.S. Army to the site, and that settled it. The nine students
entered the school, stayed the full term and eventually
graduated. Central High Museum and Visitor’s Center
commemorates this historic event.

• The Old Mill

Fans of the movie “Gone With the Wind” will enjoy a visit to
the Old Mill in North Little Rock. A historic re-creation of an
19th century water powered grist mill, it was featured in the
early scenes of the classic film.

Standing in the airport in San Diego, I began to wonder exactly how long it was going to take to get to the city of Chita in Siberia. The combination of a vodka hangover, three flights, one train ride and a jump over the international date line didn’t help. I should have paid more attention in math.

The itinerary for getting from San Diego to Chita read like this:

1. Fly from San Diego to Seattle.

2. Meet charity representative and other professor.

3. Fly from Seattle to Anchorage.

4. Fly from Anchorage on Aeroflot [gulp] to Khabarovsk, Russia.

5. Take train from Khabarovsk to Chita.

How bad could it be? Very, very, very bad. Did I mention “bad”?

Day 1

The flight to Seattle was no problem. I met Tom Dickinson, the founder of Siberian Intercultural Bridges, but we couldn’t find the other teacher. Turns out the flight to Anchorage wasn’t till the next morning, so it didn’t really appear to be a problem. Around midnight, our attitude changed and we had written off the teacher.

Day 2

At 8 a.m., Grea Waters from Kentucky appears out of the Seattle mist. We have our second professor and he speaks fluent Russian. This is a big relief as I had spent a lot of the previous evening contemplating my Russian skills. That is to say, I had none. I couldn’t even pronounce the name of city we would land in, Khabarovsk. I nearly had a panic attack during the night when I bolted up in bed upon the realization that I would have no way of knowing how to get to the train or when to get off. You see, the Russian language is based on the Cyrillic alphabet. There is no way to wing the Cyrillic alphabet. For example, the letter “y” is pronounced “ch” as in Charlie. I was in definite trouble. Would the rest of my life be spent riding around aimlessly on trains? The continued grinning of Tom Dickinson didn’t make me feel any better.

Our flight from Seattle to Anchorage was uneventful. Yes, we flew Alaska Airlines. While waiting for our connection in Anchorage, two thoughts kept running though my head. First, isn’t Aeroflot the airline with all the crashes? Second, how did a man from Kentucky become fluent in Russian? I mean, what about his accent? I was feeling less confident about my translator and decided to investigate. I started rubbing my temples when he told me that he had never been to Russia.

Alas, there was no turning back. Trust me, I tried. But that’s a story to be told in Part 3 of this nomad adventure travel series…

This was one occasion that I was a reluctant traveler. I had seen this place in movies, History Channel specials and pictures in books, so I assumed there was nothing more for me to see.

But the rest of my family wanted to go, so I drove them all to western New York State to see Niagara Falls. I was certain I would be bored into a comatose stupor within thirty minutes…after all, it was just water running over a cliff.

As we got within a few miles of the falls, I began to hear a low sound that at first crept up on me like the white noise of a machine you aren’t aware is on until it suddenly shuts off. But as we got closer, I became more aware of the sound.

It was a deep roar that was set at a constant bass note and I finally realized what I was hearing. It was the same sound that caused Jesuit missionary, Louis Hennepin heard in 1678, to investigate its source and become the first westerner to see the Niagara Falls.

This sound was what made me begin to grasp the enormity of the falls and started me thinking this just might be a little more than some water running over a cliff.

When we finally got to the railings at the edge of the falls, I was completely hypnotized, and I remained hypnotized for hours. At one moment my eyes would gaze at the entire vast panorama of falling water from the American side to the Canadian side, about a mile across. Then my eyes would just focus on the edge itself as 42 million gallons of water passed over every minute. Then they would gaze down at the swirling cloud of mist that rose up from the base. And then I would look up river at the rushing water moving inexorably toward the crest.

But it was the edge that held my gaze the most. I kept thinking, every single drop of water in the four western Great Lakes will eventually pass over this crest, flowing into the eastern Lake Ontario.

On the American side, the town of Niagara, New York is a seedy little burg that reminded me of an old carnival, long past its prime. Its heyday was in the 1950s when Niagara Falls was the number one honeymoon location for every couple in western world.

On the Canadian side, however, everything is clean, modern and reminded me of a park land. The Canadians are friendly, and offer a much better experience in every way. They host a thriving nightlife, restaurants, upscale hotels and the Casino Niagara.

If you don’t mind getting wet, you can take a ride on the famous Maid of the Mist, a very sturdy boat that holds 600 passengers and will take you into the mist below the falls. And let me point out, those plastic raincoats they hand out are essential.

Another way to see the falls is from behind. Take the Journey Behind the Falls tour down a 150 elevator into a series of man-made tunnels that allow you a view of the falls passing over your head.

As we drove back home that evening, every other family member fell asleep and I was left alone with my thoughts. Calling Niagara Falls just a water fall is like calling the Grand Canyon a hole in the ground or the Rocky Mountains just some hills.

If you ever find yourself within two or three hundred miles of Niagara, you owe it to yourself to make a daytrip to see these magnificent falls. It’s spell is nothing short of hypnotic and you will come home having just as much difficulty trying to capture the experience in words as I am having here. But it will still be worth the drive.
