Making Biodiesel at Home

Filed under: Chemical Resources — @ 3:48 pm

The Ingredients
Making biodiesel at home to take care of your needs for fuel was never easier. A few basic things easily available at the local hardware store are all that you need. As raw materials you require a supply of a liter of vegetable oil, antifreeze and lye. You also need a few basic equipments for making biodiesel at home- a blender, some plastic containers and empty water bottles, scales, funnels, a thermometer and duct tape.

The Process
Before you start making biodiesel at home, make it a point to clean and dry the equipments thoroughly. Also be very careful while handling the materials used in the process of making biodiesel at home. The preparation is summarized as under:

  • Take a half liter plastic container and pour 200 ml of antifreeze in it by a funnel. Mix the lye in it immediately. To mix the antifreeze and lye, cover the container and shake the ingredients in it till the mixture gets warm by reaction. The antifreeze will quickly dissolve the lye producing foam of sodium methoxide. Go for the next step only after the sodium methoxide fully clears up without any particles floating in it.
  • Mix the sodium methoxide in a blender with the vegetable oil (that was heated at 130 degrees Fahrenheit) in low speed for around 20 minutes. Be sure that the blender cover is tightly closed. Remove the mixture from the blender after this process. Pour the mixture into a 2 liter empty water bottle through a funnel and replace the bottle cap tightly. Allow settlement of the contents in the bottle for minimum 8 hours.
  • After the contents are fully settled in the bottle, you will find a bottom layer of glycerin of dark color distinctly separated from the pale liquid lying over it which is biodiesel. Pour the biodiesel to a clean glass jar or water bottle carefully.
  • Take two clean bottles and make a small hole in the corner of each bottle. With duct tape cover the holes and you have two wash bottles. Pour biodiesel in one wash bottle and add to it half liter of fresh water. Hold the bottle on its side and roll it till you find oil and water thoroughly mixed. Remove the duct tape and drain out the water from biodiesel. Now you have only biodiesel in the bottle that should be left for sometime to become clear and ready for use.

Home Biodiesel
This is the easy way of making biodiesel at home. Be happy in the thought of having fuel at your home.
