My Australian tour of the coast between Sydney and Melbourne has been one of the most superb vacations I have ever done. Being the coast, the scenery was spectacular, the locals were sociable and there were a plenty of things to do.
There are numerous car rental Sydney and car rental Melbourne options and that’s definitely the handiest way to experience the coast. Car hire companies are more than happy to assist you plan your tour and pin point the main attractions along the way. Car agencies are perpetually running promotions and deals. I managed to find a great one way special to Melbourne at a car hire in Sydney.
I traveled south from Sydney through Royal National Park. The Grand Pacific Drive is exciting. I took my time exploring coastal villages and spent a couple hours in the bustling city of Wollongong before stopping for the night at Jervis Bay.
The next daybreak I took a cruise to see the resident dolphin population that Jervis Bay is renowned for. I fell in love with the beaches and had a hard time deciding whether to stay or go. Further south I bought some great, high quality craft items in the historic villages of Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba.
I swam in the lagoon at Mimosa Rocks National Park and then drove a little further stopping to watch surfers at Tathra Beach. That evening I spent the night in the classy village of Metung and had a fantastic seafood platter in one of the lakeside eateries.
Wilsons Promontory National Park is home to great scenery and an abundance of wildlife such as emus, wombats and kangaroos. I spent an entire day hiking through eucalypt forests, exploring beaches and coves and climbing on granite mountains.
Next destination was Fish Creek, a tiny, quirky and thriving township with arts and crafts, books and cafes. I took the bridge over to Phillip Island, a popular family stop. At Nobbies Centre you can watch the penquins strutting up and down the beach and see one of Australia’s largest fur seal settlements.
I ended my trip in Melbourne making my last stop at the working heritage farm on Churchill Island. Renting a car was a convenient and fun way to do this awesome coastal drive from Sydney to Melbourne. Next time I may get a car rental in Melbourne and do this trip the other direction!

The Western United States is an ideal place for equestrian vacations, especially the Rocky Mountain area. The reason is that there are still some wide open spaces where people can ride freely. Much of the country east of the Mississippi has become blocked for horsemen by fences, highways, housing developments, shopping plazas and no trespassing signs. Most of the roads are paved which makes a slippery, unpleasant surface for horses and of course it is noisy and jarring for the joints. New Jersey, for example, has about 250 times the population density of Wyoming. Riding in places where there is traffic and where people are likely to be doing things like slamming doors, leaning on horns, riding bikes at speed down horse trails or just suddenly jogging around a twist in the trail adds dramatically to the level of danger while riding. Of course things can happen in wild country to spook horses too; dead trees can fall in the wind or there can be unexpected encounters with wildlife like bears or moose, but it is not nearly as likely to cause a serious accident.
From an aesthetic point of view, the tranquility and naturalness of the landscape is also a great plus for equestrian vacations. Instead of the loud noise of traffic one hears only the wind in the trees or the murmur of mountain streams. Often too from a high point one can see for many miles without spotting any sign of civilization. This kind of country is natural habitat for horses and wild ones still thrive here.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on the mountain. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though the mountain is shared by two countries. However, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Min Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. This year French alpinist Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mt Everest after reaching the summit of earlier this season.
“the Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.
Andrew Brash returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mount Everest. Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Nevertheless, he was all too aware of the potential dangers the mountain could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused Min Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism. His first found him within 182 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Chomolungma or Mount Everest to finish what he had started.
Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”
They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”
Sherchan just 10 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.
Now that Andrew Brash has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. More than 3233 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.
He was reported in good health as he began making his descent. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the mountain and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. The 75-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Everest. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Chomolungma, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali.
