Anyone Taken a Look at Mobile Internet Recently?

I ask because things definitely seem to have moved on since I last took a look at it. Much as the idea of getting mobile Internet was interesting at the time the actual technicalities of it turned me off getting it. I was worried about the download speed and the coverage across the UK.

Things seem to have moved on though. Looking at the technical specifications on Broadband Genie.co.uk the difference is huge. The best mobile broadband providers for mobile access are promising some very impressive download speeds and coverage that covers much the same as the mobile phone networks are doing.

In fact, most of them are the mobile phone networks, leveraging their systems already in place to provide coverage. It seems that this major investment by big mobile companies is just what mobile broadband needed to become a viable option for proper use, not just a toy for earlier adopters to play with.

Now I’ve not used it yet, I’m just comparing packages to find the best one for me, but this time around, it is time to get it. Being able to work online anywhere in the UK is viable now, which suits me down to the ground.

Mobile Broadband Deals Promote Growth

Filed under: Telecommunication Hub — @ 6:36 am

It seems that since the mobile broadband providers have been adding a laptop into the packages being offered sales have begun to soar, this is not as it always seemed to be.

Back in July sales of mobile broadband packages with a laptop only accounted for four per cent of the total. However, in the last month of trading this has risen to twenty seven per cent.

The average mobile broadband deal is set at around £25 per month and will run over twenty four months; this will include a laptop into the bargain. Yet if a customer signs up for a mobile broadband dongle on its own it may cost around £15 per month. This means that the customer is going to get a laptop for about £10 per month over two years, which works out at about £240!

With so many mobile broadband providers offering different laptops and services, there has never been a greater need for new customers to compare broadband deals in order to make sure that they are getting the right package to suit their needs.

A Phones 4U spokesperson said, “Since launching laptop-broadband deals, we have seen significant sales growth month-on-month and predict that laptop-broadband deals will be top-sellers this Christmas,”

This market has gone the same way as the mobile phone market did a while ago with free handsets. New customers are likely to be spoilt for choice in the coming weeks as the build up to the festive season takes hold.

How to Set up a VoIP Account with a VoIP Service Provider

Filed under: Living With Technology, Telecommunication Hub — @ 12:40 pm

The development of quicker Internet access coupled with the flexibility and reduced cost of calls using VoIP has made this new technology very attractive to prospective customers. Voice over IP is now one of the fastest growing applications on the internet with around four million VoIP users in the United Kingdom alone, not including business subscriptions.

The first step that needs to be taken when thinking about getting an account is to research the available VoIP providers and the range of services they provide. Once the provider and service have been chosen the next stage is setting up your account. This is a simple process but do keep in mind that you should check your service offers a local number. Some services don’t cover every phone exchange in which case you are likely to be offered a number from the nearest exchange thats available.

Having a non-local number may not seem like an issue when VoIP is used for outgoing calls, it will be an issue to your family and friends when they make long distance (or national rate) calls to contact you even though they may live next door. There are some VoIP services that only offer non-geographic numbers, using codes such as 0870, 0845 or 056. In the case of non-geographic numbers some limitations exist: Calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers are prohibited from most landline, mobile and VoIP providers’ all-inclusive call packages. In the case of 056 numbers, it is not possible to call them from outside the UK at present.

Thought should be given to ensuring you have access to a landline as a backup. The reason for this is that if for any reason you lose power you are likely to lose your internet connection - because the router and ADSL modem need power - and your VoIP access too, because the VoIP hardware needs to be connected to the mains. There are some types of VoIP equipment that offer a emergency option that will connect emergency calls, and all calls if there should be a power failure, to a landline. You should check this feature with your provider if you feel that you need to have this provision included in your service.

Some VoIP service providers offer services that allow you to pay for calls as you go while others offer a service that charges a single, all-inclusive fee. Plans offering unlimited local and national calls are also available for small businesses and for residential users. In the case of businesses additional features such as a free fax service are often included. There is a pricing option available to fit your needs.

Just contact the VoIP company of your choice and they will set up an account for you. The average person should be up and running with VoIP in about half an hour. Join the internet telephony revolution now!
