Can Rising Health Insurance Costs Be Controlled?

Filed under: The Healthy Way, World Of Insurance — @ 3:36 pm

If you have to pay for your own health insurance, or even if you only pay for a portion of an employer-sponsored plan, you know that premiums continue to increase. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that this will change any time in the near future.

Although some people want prices to be set by a formal health insurance commission, insurance companies generally oppose this so nothing gets changed. The best option for the average individual is to reduce the cost of their particular health insurance policy by increasing the deductible amount and reducing the maximum benefits paid out during the life of the policy.

Although it doesn’t happen very often, occasionally a health insurance company refuses to pay benefits and will not work with the insured individual to find a resolution. All health insurance policies include the option to appeal all denied claims. Once you have exhausted this process, it’s time to contact your state’s health insurance commission.

You can file a complaint with their office and they will serve as a liaison between you and the insurance company. If the insurance company is following their rules, you may not be able to receive any additional benefits. However, if the insurance company is taking advantage of you and acting against regulations, the insurance commissioner may be able to help you get your claim paid.
